I am your brother but I will judge you on your standards. I will judge you on which version of the bible you choose to read – and ignore the fact that you do choose to read the bible. I will judge you on what you wear to your church work day. I will judge you by which Christian authors you read. I will judge you on how dressed up you get- or don’t get for the Lord on Sundays.
You are my brother but you judge me on which Christian camp my kids go to. You judge me on the Christian music groups I choose to listen to and whether my Sunday morning songs come from a thick book or are shown up in front using some sort of technology. You will judge me on how much or how little Bible I use in my Sunday sermons, in my blog posts, in my conversations with fellow church members. You will judge me on what my hands are doing or not doing during church worship.
I will preach against you in my churches- and you will preach against me in yours.
The devil cheers silently so we don’t notice he’s enjoying the show.
And our Father (just like human parents of teenage girls) shakes His head as He thinks, “How can my children fight so much about things that don’t matter that much? Don’t they see that neither side is winning and, more importantly, MY cause isn’t winning?”
If you preached against real, harmful sin that is tearing apart lives and families- instead of shouting out your preferences… If you taught love and grace and forgiveness and about the Father who is the author of all things good, and true, and beautiful instead of condemning your own brothers…
…We actually might get somewhere.
